The Organic Acids Test

Dr. Arjuna Veeravagu, ND, RAc

Conventional lab testing can have many shortcomings for patients with complex chronic illnesses.  The typical blood tests ordered by GP’s often only scratch the surface of evaluating all of the potential underlying causes of chronic diseases.  Conventional stool and urine testing also offers limited insight into the root causes of symptoms.

The Organic Acids Test (OAT) is an excellent, broad spectrum lab test option for patients being evaluated for chronic illness.  This test has been refined over the nearly 20 years and now includes 75 individual metabolic markers.  The OAT is easy to collect with a single urine sample, making it an excellent option for children who don’t easily have their blood drawn.  The OAT lab markers and results are divided into the sections below:

  • Intestinal Microbial Overgrowth
  • Oxalate Metabolites
  • Glycolytic Cycle Metabolites
  • Mitochondrial Markers
  • Neurotransmitter Metabolites
  • Pyrimidine Metabolites
  • Ketone and Fatty Acid Oxidation
  • Nutritional Markers
  • Indicators of Detoxificatoin
  • Amino Acid Metabolites
  • Mineral Metabolism
  • Indicator of Fluid Intake

These highly specific markers can help physicians determine the root causes of complex chronic symptoms and create treatment protocols individualized for each patient’s pattern.  With 75 markers reported each patient will have their unique organic acid “snapshot” at any given time that is a window into their internal metabolic health.  Although the Organic Acid Test results report appears extremely complex at first glance, physicians skilled in its interpretation can determine patterns in the results quickly and apply them to patient treatment protocols.

Organic acids are chemical compounds excreted in the urine that are products of metabolism.  These acids always contain carbon and hydrogen, which classifies them as organic.  An increase in an organic acid level in the urine often indicates an imbalance in the function of the enzyme controlling a specific biochemical pathway in the body which may be vital to one’s overall health.

Organic Acid Testing can be an excellent initial screening test for a very wide variety of underlying biochemical dysfunction or imbalance.  Some of the conditions and symptoms the OAT can assist in evaluating are:

  • Irritable bowel syndrome, small intestine bacterial or candida overgrowth and other chronic digestive conditions
  • Mood imbalances including depression and anxiety
  • Chronic fatigue
  • Hyperactivity and other behavioural disorders
  • Multiple chemical sensitivities
  • Immune imbalances including chronic infections

If you think the Organic Acids test may be beneficial for yourself or a family member please schedule a consultation with your naturopathic physician at Sage Clinic to see if the OAT if a fit!
