Epsom Salt Baths for Cleansing the Mind and Body

Dr. Julie Moore, ND

Epsom Salt baths have wonderfully beneficial properties that cleanse the mind and body. For many, the New Year signals a time to start fresh, get a gym membership or do a cleanse, but in the middle of a cold winter, finding the motivation may be the hardest part. A 10 minute soak in a warm bath with 1-2 cups of Epsom salts 1-3 times per week will instantly calm the nervous system, and relieve tension and stress in the body.

A naturally occurring mineral compound of Magnesium and Sulfate, Epsom Salt penetrates the skin when dissolved in warm water, creating the ideal environment for detoxification. The warmth of the bath increases circulation to our organs and tissues, while the sulfates help flush toxins and heavy metals by actually pulling salts out of the body bringing the toxins with them. By encouraging elimination through the skin, Epsom salt soaks help restore normal function of the skin and will help relieve and heal many skin conditions such as acne, psoriasis, eczema, or minor wounds.

Magnesium is an essential mineral responsible for the function of hundreds of enzyme systems and is especially important for the muscles and the nervous system. Epsom salt baths provide an easy way for the body to absorb Magnesium and replenish electrolytes, which relaxes the muscles by removing lactic acid. This is effective for reducing stiff, sore muscles and joints, soothing painful bruises, sprains and strains and alleviating pain from over-exertion from sport activities. Restoring the levels of magnesium in the body that are depleted by stress also helps increase serotonin levels, boosting the mood and calming the mind.

If you don’t have a bathtub (or the time to clean one!) you can also use Epsom Salt as a foot-soak. You will enjoy the benefits of Magnesium Sulfate as the salt is absorbed into circulation and it is a useful remedy for athlete’s foot, gout and other afflictions of the feet.

Epsom Salts are relatively inexpensive and are available at most pharmacies and health stores. This is an easy addition to any cleansing program, and can be used by almost anyone to improve energy and motivation, while relaxing and unwinding.
